CRANSTON – Mayor Allan W. Fung this month announced the successful rollout of a new online tax and electronic billing system.

Since July, the city has collected about $1.5 million in car taxes, real estate taxes, personal property taxes and sewer assessments stemming from about 12,000 taxpayers who have used the new services.

Fung, a Republican, is reportedly considering a run for governor next year. He made a note that his successful online payment system came despite uncertainty at the state level.

“This rollout occurred during an uncertain time with the state budget temporarily stalled for weeks and car tax phaseout in limbo,” he said in a statement. “Despite those challenges, our team in City Hall has prepared to launch the new system and worked tirelessly beforehand to ensure they could handle any hiccups along the way.”

The city contracted with InvoiceCloud to provide the service.

“I am extremely proud of my staff in tax collection, who work in cooperation with all of our other city employees to successfully move Cranston into a new technology age,” said City Treasurer David Capuano.

The online payment system allows taxpayers to pay with credit and debit cards or bank transfers and register an account to schedule future payments, according to a press release.
