Sometimes schooling can’t replace life experience. In Michael S. Camacho’s case, the bachelor’s degree in accounting from Northern Illinois University couldn’t trump the wisdom he gained from his father.
In his 40 Under Forty application, Camacho, senior manager of attest and compliance for Lefkowitz, Garfinkel, Champi & DeRienzo, said that his father, a successful business owner, has been the greatest influence on his career.
“Through his dedication to outstanding customer service,” Camacho wrote, “he taught me the importance of developing professional and personal relationships with customers in order to understand what is important to them so that you consistently exceed their expectations.”
He came to the Providence accounting firm in September 2004, where he provides auditing and accounting and other business consulting services to a mix of closely held, entrepreneurially operated and publicly traded manufacturing, service and distribution companies. He also helps clients reach compliance with Sarbanes-Oxley regulations and is, as a co-leader of the company’s solutions practice, responsible for the development and execution of the firm’s IT practice strategic plan.
Previously, he worked for seven years at Deloitte & Touche in Chicago. While at the company, he progressed from audit associate to manager. Camacho’s responsibilities at the company included analytical, audit and financial control services to public, private and multinational companies. He prepared proposals, negotiated fees and managed engagement economics.
Camacho, a member of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants and the Rhode Island Society of CPAs, has also managed multinational engagement teams ranging in size from two to 30 people and has co-chaired a local management advisory committee.
As a father of two young boys, Michael also supports the Southern Rhode Island 4-H, an organization that promotes community service and involvement for the youth of the area. He has also helped the group raise money by promoting its annual golf outing and obtaining sponsorships for the event.
