UNCASVILLE, Conn. – Mohegan Sun announced plans Tuesday to expand its retail operations at its home base, with building set to begin later this year and be finished by 2015. The 200,000-square-foot project will be referred to as the Downtown District, and will feature upscale shopping, dining options and entertainment.
“As the owners and operators of Mohegan Sun, the Tribal Council is extremely excited about bringing this new development to our reservation,” Bruce “Two Dogs” Bozsum, chairman of the Mohegan Tribe, said in a statement. “It will continue our mission to serve as a job builder for the residents of our region, and bring social improvements to the community at large.”
The Hampshire Companies and The Bronson Companies have been chosen as co-developers of the project. Hampshire currently handles a portfolio of more than 250 properties totaling more than 23 million square feet, while Bronson has developed a number of New England properties, including CityPlace in Hartford, Conn.
“The Hampshire/Bronson teams are thrilled to bring this dynamic, new experience to life for Mohegan Sun and the entire region,” said Mark Rivers, president of The Bronson Companies, in prepared remarks.
Other enterprises involved in the Downtown District project are Marquee Cinemas Inc., Kings Bowl (a dining and bowling destination), and Taste of New England Gourmet Hall.
The announcement comes soon after Lincoln-based Twin River introduced its table games expansion. Taking advantage of the referendum last November, the facility now hosts blackjack, roulette and craps, making it the only full-fledged casino in Rhode Island.
