TAUNTON – MooBella LLC, the creator of a self-service ice cream machine, has closed on $25 million in Series D financing with W. Health LP, a venture fund managed by managed by Inventages Venture Capital Investment Inc. The money will enable the company to roll out its ice cream machines in the Boston area.
“This financing is an important milestone that will allow us to progress in our efforts to introduce our Ice Cream System to a greater number of locations,” said Bruce C. Ginsberg, MooBella’s president and CEO.
The MooBella Ice Cream System – a dispenser about the size of a soda machine – “instantaneously aerates, flavors, and flash freezes the ingredients to produce a freshly made, delicious scoop of ice cream,” the company says on its Web site. Each machine will offer as many as 96 combinations at a time. In each 4.5-ounce serving, customers can choose from up to 12 flavors, each in premium or low-fat, plus as many as three mix-ins.
The machines, which MooBella has been field-testing in the Boston , do not yet accept cash or credit cards, so initial installations will be in food courts and similar settings where payments are collected by a cashier.
“We continue to investigate relationships with strategic partners, which is one of the many reasons we are so pleased to welcome [Inventages partner] Erich Sieber to our board of directors. His extensive global marketing and financing expertise will greatly benefit MooBella as we move from production to national and international distribution.”
After the initial roll-out in the Boston area, the company plans to expand across New England, then “on a market by market basis domestically thereafter,” its Web site says. “International market opportunities will be evaluated during 2008.”
“I am very excited to join the MooBella team to help bring the Ice Cream System to market,” said Sieber. “Consumer reaction to both the taste of the ice cream and the experience of receiving it from a machine has been outstanding, which makes us very optimistic that we can have a significant impact on the industry.”
