WARWICK – The Rhode Island Chapter of the National Multiple Sclerosis Society was honored with the 2006 Pamela Cavallo Award at the annual National Leadership Conference. Named for a longtime national society staff member, the award recognizes excellence in client programs, professional education and advocacy.
The local chapter received the Cavallo Award for a professional education program – Faces Out of Place: Meeting the Needs of Younger Adults with MS in Long Term Care – that was a collaborative effort with the Boston Home and the Central New England Chapter of the National MS Society.

Learn MoreThe chapter also won an award for Excellence in Client Knowledge Programs, for its Monster Bash, an educational Halloween party for people with MS and their families during which a “Jeopardy” format game tested participants’ MS knowledge.
In addition, the chapter was recognized for its Newly Diagnosed Dinners, which provide information on the MS Society and on living with MS, and for its advocacy work on the state level.
“In 2006, we helped to pass a bill that allows people with MS to get coverage of MS injectable drugs through the state pharmaceutical assistance program (RIPAE),” Gwen Reeve, director of programs for the Rhode Island Chapter, said in a Friday statement. “We will continue to make advocacy a priority. … There is so much more work that must be done.”
