National Grid says reorganization on track

PROVIDENCE – National Grid Plc said Thursday that plans for its reorganization remain on track for completion by September and said there were no delays in internal announcements regarding the process.
On Wednesday, National Grid spokesman David Graves had said the utility was making announcements to employees in stages and it appeared that one announcement would be pushed off to provide more time for employees to consider their options.
On Thursday, Graves clarified that the announcements were, in fact, being made as planned.
“Some positions have been eliminated to date and more changes will be announced in future,” Graves said Thursday.
In January, National Grid announced it would cut 7 percent of its U.S. workforce of 18,000 people. The cuts, entirely from administrative positions, represent about 20 percent of the company’s U.S. management team.
The cuts are part of a strategy by the utility to align management with geographic regions rather than business lines such as natural gas and electricity services. The realignment is expected to save the utility $200 million.
Graves said it was unclear how many jobs in Rhode Island would be affected.
National Grid U.S. President Tom King previously told Providence Business News that of the approximately 900 National Grid workers in Rhode Island, about 200 are considered management and subject to potential elimination.
