Navy: Meet exciting local people, and film them

BOSTON – The U.S. Navy Leadership Challenge is asking teens from across New England, including Rhode Island, to create a short film about their hometown hero for a YouTube-based video contest.

The express purpose is to get youth participants to learn more about the lives and accomplishments of their local leaders.

One student in each New England state, plus his or her parent or legal guardian, will win a two-day, all-expenses-paid trip to a Navy installation on the East Coast. Winners can view demonstrations of cutting-edge Navy technology and tour Navy aircraft and ships.

Local students are invited to participate in the contest by uploading their submissions to the Navy Leadership Challenge YouTube Group. All contest submissions will be viewable on the YouTube page.

The contest will be launched with a phone-based news event at 10:30 a.m. this Thursday, April 17, that will include a question-and-answer session with Challenge spokesperson Rear Adm. Robin R. Braun.

The Leadership Challenge is sponsored by the Navy, New Hampshire’s Wright Museum of World War II, Big Y Foods based in Springfield, Mass., Market Basket and the Manchester (N.H.) City Library, along with other New England businesses, nonprofits and community groups.
