PROVIDENCE – Nonprofit HMO Neighborhood Health Plan of Rhode Island donated $50,000 to the Rhode Island Good Neighbor Energy Fund, according to an announcement made Monday by the United Way of Rhode Island.

The fund, which is managed by UWRI, is a cooperative effort by Rhode Island’s energy companies, local Community Action Program agencies and residents who come together to pay the energy bills of those in “temporary crisis.” CAP agencies use total household income to identify which residents are eligible to receive relief.

UWRI president and CEO, Anthony Maione, said in a statement he is “grateful for the support of the corporate community.”

Maione added that Neighborhood’s donation would be used to help more than 100 families through the fund’s Warm Thy Neighbor fundraising campaign.

“Neighborhood works hard to make sure everyone in Rhode Island has access to high-quality, affordable health care, but we also understand there are many other elements to keeping people healthy,” said Peter Marino, president and CEO of Neighborhood Health Plan of Rhode Island, in prepared remarks.  “If people are worried about how they’re going to pay their utility bills, they’re less likely to make health care a priority. Neighborhood is proud to help address that problem and allow Rhode Islanders to take comfort knowing they can keep their houses and their families warm.”

Rhode Island residents can donate to the fund through the yellow envelopes included in electric bills mailed at the end of March or by texting “WARM” to 91999.

Those unsure of their eligibility for the Good Neighbor Energy Fund can call the UWRI 211 information line to learn more.
