NEIT first R.I. university to join Project Lead The Way

PROVIDENCE – The New England Institute of Technology has become the first university in Rhode Island to join Project Lead The Way, a national nonprofit dedicated to improving access to STEM, science, technology, engineering, and math, careers for K-12 students across the United States.

As a partner of Project Lead The Way, NEIT will provide advanced course credits and scholarships to eligible students enrolled in Project Lead The Way courses while in high school, and will also host training and professional development for high school teachers.

“New England Tech is proud to pave the way as Rhode Island’s first university to partner with Project Lead The Way in this most-important initiative,” said Lynn M. Fawthrop, vice president of enrollment management and marketing at NEIT, in a statement. “In addition to offering eligible students advanced course credits, we are pleased to announce that New England Tech will provide a $3,000 scholarship per year to those PLTW students who meet the established academic requirements. The NEIT community looks forward to working with these outstanding students.”

Through the new partnership, NEIT and Project Lead The Way will challenge students to develop technical knowledge in STEM fields as well as broaden their problem-solving, critical thinking and communication skills through real-world challenges.

According to Project Lead The Way, first founded in 1997, students who participate in their programs are better prepared for postsecondary studies and more likely to consider STEM majors and careers. In the past 20 years, Project Lead The Way has engaged millions of students and tens of thousands of teachers, focusing on empowering K-12 students by transforming the learning and teaching experience for students and teachers alike.
