NEW BEDFORD – The city and the Massachusetts Bay Transit Authority have reached an agreement on constructing a new $21 million pedestrian bridge as part of the new downtown rail station being built.

The city says the bridge would be a walkway over John F. Kennedy Boulevard between Purchase Street and the station. There have been negotiations between the city and the MBTA for more than a year, the city said.

As a result of those negotiations, MBTA, according to the city, will design and build the bridge to the city’s preferences. The MBTA will also cover all the bridge’s construction costs.

Mayor Jon Mitchell is now requesting the City Council to approve the agreement at an upcoming meeting, the city says.

“New Bedford deserves public amenities and spaces that are both functional and beautiful.  For a highly visible structure like this pedestrian bridge, excellence in design is a must,” Mitchell said in a statement. “We have achieved that goal with this design, and I am grateful for the collaborative efforts between our team and the MBTA’s. The result will be a new city landmark of which we can all be proud.”
