WEST WARWICK – The Salgi Esophageal Cancer Research Foundation has been granted 501(c)(3) status by the Internal Revenue Service.
Formed in honor of Salvatore Molfesi, who died in 1998 of esophageal cancer, the foundation’s mission includes providing support for research into the nearly always fatal disease, as well as raising awareness about it and encouraging early detection.
“My family and I suffered through an obvious tumultuous and heartbreaking ordeal as countless other families of cancer victims have,” said foundation President Linda Molfesi in a statement announcing the foundation’s formation. “When my father was diagnosed, this type of cancer was unheard of … by our family.”
The foundation is planning a fundraising walk on Saturday, June 16 at 9 a.m. at Warwick City Park. For information about the event, go to salgi.org.
