Walls and the roofs are upright on a new 10-unit condominium project, and work is approximately 55 percent complete. Ground broke on the project during the summer of 2018, with early June 2019 being the target time frame for the project to be finished. The units range between two stories and three stories in height and will have garages. Water, sewer and natural gas will be connected to the condos and residents will have a partial view of the bay. Landscaping will include trees and evergreens. Warwick-based Centerville Builders Inc. is overseeing the construction and Cranston-based Contemporary Landscape Construction Inc. is performing the sitework.

James L. McGuire and Stephen Olney elementary schools | 55 Central Ave. and 1378 Douglas Ave., North Providence
Two new elementary schools are beginning to take shape in North Providence. Exterior walls are now covering the steel frames of both Stephen Olney Elementary School and James L. McGuire Elementary School. The former school buildings, built in the 1930s on Central and Douglas avenues, were demolished in the summer of 2017 to make way for the new structures, which are set to be open for classes at the start of the 2019-20 academic year. Ground broke on the project – funded on a voter-approved $75 million bond from 2016 to make upgrades to the town’s schools – in May 2017. Each school will be 63,500 square feet in size and will accommodate grades K-5, with each school housing 480 students. McGuire students are currently taking classes at the former George C. Calef School in Johnston and Olney students are learning at the former St. Patrick School in North Providence, while construction is ongoing. Some students at Marieville Elementary School will be moved to the new Olney School. Both schools will be designed to have natural light flow through the buildings, as well as have “learning commons” educational spaces. Outdoor spaces will be an extension of the educational, athletic and community programs. Gilbane Building Co. in Providence is the construction manager for the project and S/L/A/M Collaborative Inc. in Glastonbury, Conn., is the project architect.

Meeting Street | 1000 Eddy St., Providence
Steel and supports are erected on the two-story, 28,000-square-foot addition to the nonprofit Meeting Street’s main campus building, with the exterior walls currently being installed. Ground broke on the $14 million project – financed through the Rhode Island Health and Educational Building Corp. – in June 2018. The addition is expected to be completed in June 2019, according to Diane Parent, Meeting Street’s chief business officer. The construction is part of a two-phase project, which includes the installment of the soccer fields, track and parking area, and expected to be finished by February. The building will house new classrooms, a new wing for the nonprofit’s Carter School – a high school for students with special needs – a retail center, and new literacy center for The Grace School for students in grades K-8. East Providence-based New England Construction is the project manager. Murphy Burnham & Buttrick Architects in New York is the project architect and the construction administration architect is Saccoccio & Associates Inc. in Cranston. Kite Architects in Providence is also an architectural firm hired for this project.
