PROVIDENCE – A penthouse apartment will be created atop a historical building in downtown Providence.
The project will create a 2,000-square-foot residential apartment on the roof of the 12-story Union Trust Co. Building. It will not be visible from within 180 to 200 feet of the building, according to Eric Army, principal architect for Studio MEJA.

Building owner Providence Capital III LLC is in the process of renovating and converting the Union Trust Co. Building to a mix of commercial and residential units. The ground-floor tenant is The Dorrance restaurant, and the Providence offices of Sen. Sheldon Whitehouse, D-R.I., are on the second floor.
All remaining floors will be converted to residential apartments, a process that is ongoing. Floors three through six are renovated and occupied, while the work is nearly complete on floors seven through nine, Army said.
The original plan would have created a rooftop restaurant for the former office building, but the elevator lobby area was not adequate for people waiting for elevators. In addition, the cost of adding a new elevator to the roof was a concern, Army said.
The Downtown Design Review Committee authorized the design for the exterior of the apartment on Feb. 12.
