Newport Historical Society hosts guided, socially distant winter walking tours

NEWPORT – The Newport Historical Society will host a series of guided walks this winter, to promote the city’s diverse and interesting history.

The weekly programs start Saturday, Feb. 6, at 1 p.m. with a discovery of the early history of Newport’s people of color, including enslaved and free people on the “Creative Survival” tour. The tour will include the places where enslaved people lived and worked, along with locations where free African Americans built their businesses and supported a local industry.

Additional tours include the “Golden to Gilded” tour that covers the transformation of the city in the Gilded Age, and “Road to Independence,” which covers riots and rebellions in the American Revolution era.

All tours will follow social distancing requirements and participants have to wear a face mask. Tours will not exceed 10 people. Tickets are to be purchased at NewportHistoryTours.org.
