Newport Hospital offers mammograms to uninsured, underinsured women

NEWPORT – Newport Hospital is offering free screening mammograms and breast exams to uninsured and underinsured Rhode Island women, with exams to be given this Saturday, Oct. 23, from 8 to 11 a.m. and appointments for a free mammogram to be made at that time.
To qualify, patients must be Rhode Island residents, at least 40 years old, and have no health insurance coverage for a screening mammogram.
Women will be able to have their exams and mammograms at Newport Hospital or at the hospital’s new Portsmouth Imaging Center, and the hospital will provide transportation and interpreter services for those who require them.
Newport Hospital uses digital mammography, which was shown in a 2005 study to detect 28 percent more breast cancers in women under 50 than conventional mammography does.
The American Cancer Society has projected that 192,000 new cases of invasive breast cancer would be diagnosed among U.S. women in 2009, as well as 62,280 additional cases of in situ – non-invasive – breast cancer.
About 40,000 women were expected to die from breast cancer last year, more than from any other cancer except lung cancer. According to the National Cancer Institute, about 2.5 million U.S. women with a history of breast cancer were alive in January 2006.
To sign up for a free breast exam, women should call (401) 845-1592.

  1. Detecting breast cancer early, increase the possibility of getting effective treatment before the disease spread widely. Mammogram screening is quite crucial which is like an X-ray of tissues inside the breast. It is used to find a small cancer, however, many doctors has lots of doubt in conventional mammography results. They not consider it perfect, but now with the arrival of 3D mammography invented by Hologic present at http://www.ilexmedical.com/ the false issues of results have overcome. It is essential for a woman in their 40s to have mammograms every year.

  2. @SeanCrabtree : Your post is informative. Definitely women in their 40’s or I would say even younger must undergo mammogram screening in a year. This will help them to prevent against the disease.
