NEWPORT – Newport Hospital awarded $83,125 from the Frederick Henry Prince Memorial Fund to 20 organizations throughout the Newport community, Lifespan Inc. announced Wednesday.
“We’re proud to continue the fund’s focus on enriching the health and well being of local residents,” said Crista F. Durand, president of Newport Hospital, in a statement. “By awarding these stellar programs, Newport Hospital is enhancing our commitment to promoting active, healthy lifestyles to the youngest residents of Newport County. We’re honored to support these organizations.”

The press release said that programs that received funding promote active lifestyles, education, and fun for children and teenagers.
The Frederick Henry Prince Memorial Fund began awarding grants in 2010 when Elizabeth Prince of Newport and her children Guillaume de Ramel, Diana Oehrli and Regis de Ramel conferred upon Newport Hospital a $3 million grant from the Frederick Henry Prince 1932 Trust.
The following organizations received 2017 awards:
- City of Newport ($10,000): New Newport skate park.
- Newport County YMCA ($10,000): The 12-week “Prescribe the Y” program is offered to children aged 6-16 to reduce childhood obesity in Newport County through comprehensive physical fitness and nutrition education programming.
- Lucy’s Hearth ($6,000): The Healthy Kids, Healthy Families program provides families in emergency shelters with proper nutrition, routine exercise, self-care and stress reduction.
- Rhodysquash ($5,000): The Powered by Prince kids of the Rhodysquash summer camp enjoy a one-week summer camp, which teaches healthy eating habits, selflessness through service, and rigorous exercise through the game of squash.
- Special Olympics Rhode Island ($5,000): Unified junior sports for Aquidneck Island children with and without intellectual disabilities.
- Star Kids Scholarship Program ($5,000): After-school support for Star Kids students.
- Sail to Prevail ($4,890): Confidence is Cool.
- Newport Gulls LTD ($4,000): Newport Gulls 2017 season.
- Aquidneck Cyclocross ($3,000): Pell School cyclocross program.
- Butler Basketball Club ($3,000): Butler basketball skills and drills.
- FabNewport ($3,000): Future Lab Summer 2017.
- International Tennis Hall of Fame ($3,000): Hall of Fame Tennis Club.
- Jamestown Parks and Recreation Department ($3,000): Beach volleyball at Fort Getty.
- Newport County Youth Rugby Football Club ($3,000): 2017 FHP Island Rugby High School/Middle School and Rookie Rugby for boys and girls, ages 7-12.
- Newport Little League ($3,000): Supporting young baseball and softball players.
- Newport Open Space Partnership/Newport Tree Society ($3,000): Newport Summer Fun Days.
- Norman Bird Sanctuary ($3,000): Teen Green Trail Guide Program.
- Sail Newport ($3,000): Newport public school fourth-grade sailing program.
- Newport County Shooting Stars ($2,000): Soccer team for children with special needs.
- Aquidneck Land Trust ($1,235) : Fitness in the Park 2017 at Miantonomi Park.
