Newport Mansions exceed 1 million tours for second consecutive year

NEWPORT – The Preservation Society of Newport County gave 1,017,586 tours of its 11 historic properties last year, the second consecutive year it has exceeded 1 million tours, the organization announced Jan. 12.

The Newport Mansions were the most-visited museum in New England in September and October, according to a PSNC news release.

One of the recent attractions drawing visitors to the mansions is the special exhibition schedule, which in 2017 included “Beneath the Breakers,” an underground guided tour of the mansion’s boiler room, tunnel and basement spaces, and “Pierre Cardin: 70 Years of Innovation” at Rosecliff, which will close in February.

Additional tours are planned in the spring, including “Bohemian Beauty: The Aesthetic Movement and Oscar Wilde’s Newport” at Rosecliff in March, a new audio family tour of Marble House and audio tours of the gardens and landscapes of The Elms and Chateau-sur-Mer.
