PROVIDENCE – If last year is any guide, 3,000 people will take part in the 2017 Alzheimer’s Association Walk to End Alzheimer’s, which will is scheduled over two weekends in September in Newport and Providence.
The 3.5-mile walks, at Fort Adams State Park in Newport and at Roger Williams Park in Providence, both start at 10 a.m., with the Newport walk taking place on Sunday, Sept. 17, and the Providence walk on Saturday, Sept. 23. In addition to raising money to fund research to end Alzheimer’s, the two events will provide refreshments, entertainment, exhibitor tents and more. The walks are sponsored by the Rhode Island chapter of the Alzheimer’s Association, which is one of the world’s leaders in support and research for a cure as well as for providing enhanced care to those suffering from the disease. Programs and services provided by the Rhode Island chapter of the national organization include: a 24/7 hotline; support groups; training for families, newsletters, conferences and fundraising events, among other things. The association estimates that there are 23,000 Rhode Islanders living with Alzheimer’s.
