NewportFed pledges $10K to Seamen’s Institute

NEWPORT – The NewportFed Charitable Foundation has pledged $10,000 over the next five years to the Seamen’s Church Institute of Newport.
The money will help fund the Third Floor Housing Restoration Project, which aims to improve the quality, capacity and accessibility to the institute’s residency program.
The Seamen’s Institute serves those who live, work and travel on the sea, as well as persons of at-risk and disadvantaged circumstances who are referred by the Newport community.
“We are so impressed by the work and commitment of the Seamen’s Institute, it’s an honor to help them financially,” Kevin McCarthy, president and CEO of NewportFed, said of the donation.
Newport Bancorp Inc. (Nasdaq: NFSB) is the holding company for Newport Federal Savings Bank, a $370 million institution created by the 2005 merger of NewportFed and Westerly Savings bank that converted from a mutual bank to a shareholder institution in mid-2006.
