Nicolato to succeed Maione as UWRI president and CEO

PROVIDENCE – United Way of Rhode Island announced Thursday the appointment of Cortney Nicolato as president and CEO of the capital-based nonprofit organization, succeeding soon-to-retire President and CEO Anthony Maione.

In a statement, Nicolato, who was born and raised in Pawtucket and is a graduate of the University of Rhode Island, said she was “humbled by the opportunity to come home and serve the community that means so much to [her].”

She described her career, in her prepared remarks, as being “centered on impacting lives using innovative approaches” and hopes to continue that work with the UWRI.

Nicolato, a current resident of Lantana, Texas and president and CEO of The Senior Source, the largest North Texas social services nonprofit targeting the senior population therein, will take up the position on Sept. 24.

“Cortney brings a deep passion to serve others and to bring innovative approaches to long-standing community challenges,” said UWRI Board Member Dolph L. Johnson, Jr., in a statement.

Nicolato has held nonprofit and business leadership positions – including with the American Heart Association and Get Real Health – for the past 17 years.

Maione, who announced a Dec. 31, 2018 retirement earlier this year, will be present during the first four months of Nicolato’s tenure.

During Maione’s leadership, UWRI raised more than $170 million dollars and, by his count, faced some of the most challenging fundraising periods in recent decades.

“The Board is grateful to Tony for his exceptional stewardship of the organization, which he leaves in a strong financial position,” said UWRI Board President Sandra J. Pattie, president and CEO of BankNewport, in prepared remarks.
