As part-owner of the four-generation Pezza Farm in Johnston, Doreen Pezza knows what it takes to be a farmer.
“Farming is not a glamorous industry,” she said, “it takes a certain person who wants to do it.”
After three years of hosting women-in-agriculture conferences for the state’s female farmers, Pezza hopes more women will become interested in the industry. Last November Pezza established Rhode Island Women in Agriculture – a nonprofit to educate women about careers in farming and help those already in the industry establish better networking circles.
She said not many people understand how much farming goes on in Rhode Island, let alone the influence of female farmers in those operations.
Per the 2012 census, there were 773 female farm operators in Rhode Island, 20.3 percent of all farm operators.
The organization established as a nonprofit to be tax exempt, said Pezza, and holds its meetings at Farm Service Agency offices in Warwick.
