North Kingstown switching to energy-saving IT equipment

NORTH KINGSTOWN – The town is launching a three-year technology project aimed at replacing legacy PCs, servers and data storage gear with energy-saving products from Dell Inc.
Using Dell’s Energy Calculator, IT managers for North Kingstown determined the community could save more than $21,000 annually in electricity costs by installing Dell Energy Smart servers and desktops in all town offices. North Kingstown has also joined Dell’s “Plant a Forest for Me” program, an initiative that helps Dell customers offset the carbon dioxide emissions associated with their technology purchases by planting trees.
“With Dell as our partner, the Town of North Kingstown is committed to deploying technology that decreases energy consumption and reduces the town’s carbon footprint,” said Jason Albuquerque, North Kingstown’s IT director. “Our investment promises energy and cost savings over the life of the equipment, as well as the peace of mind that we’re better managing our collective resources.”
The community, the No. 1 recycler of e-waste in the state of Rhode Island, is also looking at shoring up its building and power infrastructure so it can more effectively regulate the flow of energy.
