WARWICK – Norwegian Air is closing its pilot and cabin-crew base at T.F. Green Airport, the company confirmed Wednesday.

The removal of the Rhode Island base is part of a larger cost-cutting measure that affected several cities globally.

The company noted that it will be offering pilots and cabin crews the opportunity to transfer to other bases within its network.

Norwegian Air Chief Financial Officer Geir Karlsen said in November the carrier would idle planes and trim capacity, deepen a cost-cutting program and boost hedging measures. It sold six Boeing Co. 737s in August and two in October, and then unveiled the plan to offload five Airbus A320s.

Reuters reported the flights affected are operated by Boeing 737-800 and 737 MAX 8 models.

The company said it will continue to operate to and from T.F. Green and that “all flights currently out for sale will remain intact.”

A spokesman also reiterated that no flights are affected by the change.

A spokesman for the R.I. Airport Corp. said Wednesday evening, “We have seen the news from Norwegian Air on the changes to their base crews. Norwegian has reported that they will continue service to PVD and we expect no changes in their current winter or summer schedules. We hope to have more specifics in the coming days allowing us to relay accurate information to Rhode Island travelers.”
