PROVIDENCE – The R.I. Department of Health has temporarily suspended a nursing assistant after discovering she had become a beneficiary of a patient's Individual Retirement Account, or IRA. Christina Goncalves Depina was working as a nursing assistant for Visiting Angels of Rhode Island when she allowed a patient to designate her as a beneficiary of their IRA, according to a consent order RIDOH issued on Oct. 1. Depina has said the patient asked her to be an IRA beneficiary and that it was meant to be a temporary designation. Also, Depina had administered morphine to the patient multiple times even though she was not licensed or trained to administer the drug, which is considered a controlled substance, according to RIDOH. Depina said the patient was too weak to administer the morphine. Under the consent order Depina and RIDOH agreed on, Depina’s license will be suspended for six months. Depina will not be able to have her license reinstated unless she shows RIDOH she has completed two courses. When Depina’s license is reinstated she will be placed on a one-year probation. While under probation, Depina must work at a hospital or nursing facility under direct supervision and her employers must provide RIDOH with reports on her job performance each quarter. A representative of Visiting Angels of Rhode Island was reached by phone Monday morning but could not immediately comment on the matter. Katie Castellani is a PBN staff writer.
