PROVIDENCE – Employment on nonfarm payrolls in the Providence metropolitan area in October increased 0.5 percent year over year – not seasonally adjusted – to 596,000 jobs, a rise of 3,100, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics Thursday.
Unemployment in the metro area was a non-seasonally adjusted 3.8 percent in October, a 0.6 percentage point decline year over year. The number of unemployed in the metro area in October was 25,994, a decline of 3,600 year over year.

The civilian labor force in the Providence metro increased 473 year over year from 678,057 in October 2016 to 678, 530 in October 2017 – not seasonally adjusted.
In the New Bedford metropolitan area, unemployment increased 0.6 percentage points year over year, not seasonally adjusted, to 4.8 percent in October. The number of unemployed workers increased 587 to 4,037 in October. The civilian labor force also grew year over year, by 1,851 to 84,633.
The number of employees on not-seasonally adjusted nonfarm payrolls increased 3.1 percent year over year in the New Bedford metro to 70,600, an increase of 2,100.
In Rhode Island, non-seasonally adjusted unemployment declined 0.8 percentage points to 3.9 percent in October. The number of unemployed declined 4,488 to 21,265 in October. The civilian labor force marginally increased in the month, year over year, rising 183 civilians.
Nonfarm payrolls in the Ocean State, also non-seasonally adjusted, rose 0.9 percent year over year to 502,300.
