Opinion: Conn.’s governor calls for tolls on cars, trucks, reversing position

PROVIDENCE – Conn. Gov. Ned Lamont called for tolling for both trucks and cars in Connecticut in an op-ed in the Connecticut Post Saturday.

Lamont had previously called for truck-only tolls in his campaign for governor, but Saturday he said that the move wouldn’t raise as much revenue as he thought was necessary to upgrade the state’s transportation systems, calling a truck-toll option “piecemeal.”

“There is no doubt in my mind that our transportation fund will require additional strategic and recurring revenues in the very near future,” Lamont wrote. “In my opinion, there is no way around that hard fact.”

Lamont said that if such a tolling system were to be put in place through the legislature, he’d want a discount for Connecticut EZ-Pass users and/or a “frequent driver” discount.

Lamont also said that he has included projections for tolling revenue in a budget he will submit to the Connecticut legislature Wednesday.
