THE AVERAGE COST of staying in a semi-private room in a nursing home can run $80,000 to $90,000 a year. PACE Organization of Rhode Island helps frail seniors delay the need for a long-term stay by four years and even avoid it altogether.

It is little wonder this nonprofit is on pace for rapid growth.

“We anticipate 42% growth over the next couple years based on Rhode Island aging demographics, public interest in alternatives to a nursing home, and our increased awareness-raising activities,” said Tom Boucher, PACE’s chief of marketing and development.

PACE saw website traffic triple and participant enrollments increase by 75% between April and June as nursing homes became ground zero for the COVID-19 pandemic, Boucher said.

Next June, PACE will double its administrative space when it moves its headquarters from Providence to the former home of Citizens Bank’s mortgage division facility in East Providence. The new space will have an adult day center, state-of-the-art clinic, expanded rehabilitation serices, and room for art and music activities.
