Health Care Heroes Awards 2023: Mental Health Provider/Advocate
Patricia Fiske
The Groden Network senior director of adult services and director of nursing

What led you to choose health care as your profession? Nursing was a second career that was the result of recognizing firsthand the need to have a strong advocate who could understand and communicate to the whole team with and for this vulnerable population. The goal is a thorough and complete reflection of the health status and goals with the individual and support to accomplish them.

How have you helped boost the quality of or access to health care? Recognizing the need for a bridge with a voice for our clients who could not speak for themselves. Using that voice and knowledge to work collaboratively, advocating and assuring the best possible supports toward wellness and health. Being certified is a terrific support and resource to move forward and have the most up-to-date information available.

What is the biggest challenge you and your organization are facing this year? COVID-19 and its residual ugly face, of course, has been an ever-present, almost chronic challenge, and staying ahead of it to keep everyone protected and safe. Current challenges from my view are assuring community opportunities, community buy-in, and the staff and wages to afford that work.

Tell us one thing that most people don’t know about you. I aspire and work toward being a better human. I escape to the woods, listen to the trees and hike as a strategy. When not able to escape, I mindfully consider my words and actions like my psychology mentor Grace and keep moving forward in nursing as promised to my nurse mentor Dolores.
