Since 2010, PBN has been recognized as either “Newspaper of the Year” or as a distinguished runner-up for its print and digital publications nine times in its category. This year, the New Boston Beacon and Worcester Magazine were named as distinguished runners-up in the specialty category.

According to NENPA, its newspaper of the year competition is unique in the industry in being judged by audience members. New England newspaper readers are appointed to evaluate the entries from a news-consumer point of view and decide which deserves the honor of being named “Newspaper of the Year.”

PBN’s staff was also recognized with a Publick Occurrences award. The recognition is named for the first newspaper published in the nation, in 1690 in Boston, and is given for outstanding individual and team effort during the competition’s 12-month period, June 1, 2021, to May 31, 2022.

PBN’s monthly Everybody’s Business feature earned a Publick Occurrences award from the New England Newspaper & Press Association during its annual fall conference. The paper is one of 13 news organizations to be recognized with the honor this year for outstanding work during the contest period.

Judges called PBN’s monthly Everybody’s Business feature, which began in September 2020, “A very topical approach to business reporting against the backdrop of national divisiveness over race, immigration and ethnicity.” They added, “The paper should be commended for the diversity [of subjects] in the series.”

PBN has previously received five Publick Occurrences awards:

  • For a three-part series in 2018 on climate change.
  • For a four-part series in 2016 that examined the unfunded liabilities of Rhode Island municipal pension and other post-employment benefit plans.
  • For coverage of the 2014 gubernatorial and Providence mayoral elections.
  • For its coverage of the 38 Studios LLC bankruptcy.
  • And for coverage of the March 2010 floods.

The Providence Journal was the only other publication in Rhode Island and southeastern Massachusetts recognized in the newspaper-of-the-year categories. The paper earned distinguished runner-up in both weekday circulation of more than 20,000 and in Sunday circulation of more than 25,000.
