PROVIDENCE – Long-time Amica Mutual Insurance Co. Chairman, President and CEO Robert A. DiMuccio has been named the business leadership award winner in Providence Business News’ 14th annual Business Excellence Awards competition.
DiMuccio will be joined by seven organizations and one individual who are to be feted on Nov. 12 at a dinner event at the Providence Marriott Downtown, including Bank of America Senior Vice President Oliver Bennett for corporate citizenship and The Washington Trust Co. for excellence at a large company.
DiMuccio’s “open and personal communication style” was listed among examples of his leadership qualities in the application that was submitted by the company, with a particular focus on his “positive influence” on employees and customers, as well as his commitment to clearly communicating company goals and policies. In addition, the application noted his accessibility through regular “town meetings” and his broad understanding and insight into the insurance business, along with his encouragement of senior staff and their teams “to explore new ideas and solutions, which is vital as the insurance industry works to keep up with the ever-changing needs of consumers.”
DiMuccio is a native of Providence, who attended Providence College. He joined Amica in 1991 as a vice president in the accounting department after a dozen years at KPMG Peat Marwick, rising through the ranks to become the insurer’s president and CEO in 2005 and chairman in 2008. Under his leadership, earlier this year Amica was named a J.D. Power Customer Champion for a third time, one of five insurance companies to be so recognized in 2014.
Bennett is being recognized for his significant involvement in nonprofits in the region, including serving on the board of the Providence Preservation Society, the Institute for the Study & Practice of Nonviolence, Rhode Islanders Sponsoring Education, the Providence Children’s Museum, the Providence Public Library and The Wolf School.
“From the beginning of his career, [Bennett] believed that giving back and working to make the community better is part of a banker’s role. He’s put this belief into action,” said William F. Hatfield, Bank of America’s Rhode Island president and Bennett’s nominator, as well as winner of the inaugural corporate citizenship award in 2009.
