Piccerelli Gilstein & Company, LLP (PG&Co.) was chosen as one of the initial recipients of New England Donor Services ‘Donate Life Rhode Island Employer Award’. PG&Co. was presented with the Donate Life award at their workplace on April 15, 2019 at 3:30pm in their main reception room. April is National Donate Life Month, which celebrates and promotes organ donation.
The award recognizes an employer or workplace that went above and beyond in support of an employee while the employee was waiting for an organ transplant and/or after the transplant surgery, or an employee who donated an organ as a living donor. Terry Perrotta, PG&Co. paraprofessional, who received a double lung transplant in January of 2013, nominated her employer. Terry just recently celebrated her 6th anniversary of good health since her surgery.
Bill Piccerelli, co-founder and partner of the firm, said, “Terry is truly a very special lady, and we are appreciative of the Award, but most importantly we are so very blessed to have her with us today.”
Transplant patients often face many struggles during their wait—for some people the wait for a transplant can be months to several years. Many patients have shared that the support they received from their family, friends and community, including the workplace, made a tremendous difference in their journey toward recovery, and can be essential to the living donor’s experience prior to surgery and recovery.
“I couldn’t have asked for a more caring group of people,” said Terry Perrotta, paraprofessional at PGCO. “It was important to me to continue working while waiting for my transplant. I truly believe I couldn’t have gotten through it without their encouragement and support”.
Approximately half of the U.S. adult population is registered as donors. However, the number of people in need of transplants continues to outpace the number of donor organs. For more information about how to get involved, or to register as a donor or, please visit www.RegisterMe.org.
New England Donor Services (https://neds.org/) is an affiliation of two federally designated Organ Procurement Organizations: LifeChoice Donor Services and New England Organ Bank. Together, the organizations coordinate the recovery of donated organs and tissues at nearly 200 hospitals to provide life-saving and life-enhancing transplants to patients in need.
