SCITUATE – Christopher W. Stanley, a Ponaganset High School history teacher, was presented the 2018 Mary K. Bonsteel Tachau Teacher of the Year award by the Organization of American Historians in mid-April.
The honor, awarded annually to precollegiate history educators for their efforts in improving the teaching of American history, was awarded to Stanley for his “pedagogically innovative and historically sound” approach to history education, per the OAH announcement.

Stanley’s curriculum surrounding the 1804-1806 Lewis and Clark expedition, which included journal entries written by students in order to better comprehend viewpoints and cultures of all parties in the historical event, was singled out as a particularly noteworthy achievement.
In its statement commending Stanley, the OAH said of the project: “Once completed, the Lewis and Clark Project serves as a source of pride for all his students.”
Founded in 1907 and based in Sacramento, Calif., the OAH chose Stanley during its annual meeting earlier this year. Edward L. Ayers, OAH president, presented Stanley with the award April 13.
