Preservation Society of Newport County releases spring program schedule

NEWPORT – In conjunction with its “Bohemian Beauty: The Aesthetic Movement and Oscar Wilde’s Newport,” the Preservation Society of Newport County has released a docket of lectures through June 9.

Remaining events (all tickets must be purchased in advance):

  • Garden Tour, Saturday, June 2, 10-11 a.m., The Breakers Greenhouses, Bateman Avenue, Newport: Jim Donahue, PSNC curator of historic landscapes, will host a tour of The Breakers greenhouses and cutting garden, where attendees will learn how the Preservation Society maintains the tradition of estate gardening and horticulture. Tickets are $15 for members and $20 for the general public.
  • Family Garden Fun Day, Saturday, June 2, 10 a.m. to noon, Green Animals Topiary Garden, Portsmouth: Learn about the growing season in Rhode Island and which seeds are best for your garden in the early summer, plus take home a seedling for your own garden. Tickets are free for members and $10 for the general public.   
  • One-Day Travel Tour, Saturday, June 2, or Saturday, June 16, The Eustis and Bradley Estates, Milton, Mass.: Visit the Eustis Estate, a rare surviving example of 19th-century aesthetic-movement architecture designed by Boston architect William Ralph Emerson, and the Bradley Estate, an early farmstead that was transformed in 1902 by country house architect Charles Platt to an estate that included a colonial revival house, gardens and 90 acres of grounds. Tickets are $95 for members and $115 for the general public. The bus departs 424 Bellevue Ave. at 9 a.m. and returns by 5 p.m. Registration includes motor coach transportation, guided tours, lunch and PSNC escorts.
  • Rosecliff Lecture on America’s Romance with the English Garden, Tuesday, June 5, 6 p.m.: Using essays, illustrations and ads, Thomas Mickey will explore the beginning of the modern garden industry in the 1890s, which made it possible to publish and mail seed and nursery catalogs in mass quantities across the country, heightening interest in the romantic English garden style. Tickets are $10 for members and $15 for the general public.
  • Green Animals Topiary Garden Tour, Saturday, June 9, 10-11 a.m.: Dan Christina, Green Animals chief horticulturalist, will host a walk through the topiary, featuring flowers, fruits and vegetables. Tickets are $15 for members and $20 for the general public.
