PROVIDENCE – The Providence Preservation Society today announced plans to unveil its 2007 Most Endangered Properties List on Tuesday, May 8, during a 4 p.m. celebration at the new Renaissance Providence Hotel.
Those attending the reception are to include the society’s 50th Anniversary Hall of Fame members.
The event’s site – in the former Masonic Temple at 5 Avenue of the Arts – is “perhaps the most fitting symbol of the success of the Most Endangered Properties List,” the society said. The building was on the list for 10 years before being transformed into a luxury hotel.
“Most resources on the list represent an important aspect of local community life and character,” the society said. “The sites [face] threats such as deterioration, neglect, insufficient funds, insensitive public policy and inappropriate development – problems that frequently threaten properties throughout Providence.”
The list, launched in 1994, is returning after a hiatus of several years. Its purpose is to generate interest in and support for the preservation of “significant resources” in the community, and educate the public about the benefits of historic preservation.
