PROVIDENCE – Dr. Joseph Amaral, Rhode Island Hospital’s president and CEO since April 2000, today announced he will step down as CEO effective June 30. He will continue to serve as interim president until a successor is appointed.
“I am proud of the accomplishments of all who have worked at Rhode Island Hospital during my tenure as president and CEO, and consider the achievements of the institution of your making, and truly miraculous,” he said in a letter this afternoon to hospital employees. “To have led this institution is an experience I will always treasure.”
During his seven-year tenure, Amaral has overseen more than $420 million in infrastructure and facilities investments, including the rebuilding and expansion of the hospital’s emergency department; the creation of the musculoskeletal, Hallett Diabetes and the Comprehensive Cancer centers of excellence; and the doubling of external research funding, from both the National Institute of Health and private sources, to more than $50 million. He has improved labor relations, and helped establish a labor-management trust to fund employee education. And he has taken the company from operating losses to four years of surpluses.
“Dr. Amaral has provided tremendous leadership at RIH over the past seven years, and he is to be commended for a job exceedingly well done,” said George Vecchione, chairman and CEO of the Lifespan health care network. “I am personally very grateful for his service, as is the whole Lifespan community. I will miss his leadership, energy and insight and wish him continued success.”
Added Lawrence Aubin, chair of the Rhode Island Hospital board of trustees: “His vision and leadership helped us to rebuild much of the hospital’s campus and to add new facilities and services – and his commitment to philanthropy helped secure the funds to make it all possible.”
