PROVIDENCE – A set of grandparents of both current and former Providence College students have provided the college a seven-figure gift to support both student athletes and other prospective students in gaining an education at PC.

The college announced Monday that Bill and Jacalyn Egan provided PC with a $1 million grant that will be split between two funds, the Egan Family Fund for Friar Basketball and the Egan Family Scholarship Fund. The Family Fund for Friar Basketball supports student athletes at the college, while the Family Scholarship Fund is an endowed scholarship that supports students from Portsmouth, Middletown and Newport, PC said.

PC said the Egans have been longtime supporters of the college and Bill Egan has a longstanding relationship with Ed Cooley, PC’s men’s basketball coach. Additionally, the Egans, after conversing with PC staff, realized how the donation could assist students from the Aquidneck Island area who may not have the financial means to attend PC, the college said.

“Financial need is unending. Whether you do it now or later, it will never be enough,” Bill Egan said. “An education gives you an opportunity to have more opportunities. We hope it inspires others to do this as well.”
