PROVIDENCE – The Providence Fire Department was awarded $750,000 in federal funds for a new heavy-rescue truck, the R.I. congressional delegation announced Wednesday.

The funds come from the Federal Emergency Management Agency’s Assistance to Firefighters Grant Program.

The purchase of a new truck will allow the department to retire a 38-year-old medium-duty model from the fleet and move a 2004 heavy-duty model to a support role. The new vehicle will become the department’s primary heavy-rescue fire truck.

“I am pleased to deliver federal funds to help the Providence Fire Department upgrade their fleet of heavy-rescue trucks. Replacing the department’s aging heavy-rescue truck with a more modern apparatus will enhance public safety and help our dedicated firefighters do their jobs effectively and efficiently,” said Sen. Jack Reed, D-R.I.
