Providence Housing Authority receives $770,000

PROVIDENCE – The Providence Housing Authority received $770,000 in federal grants this week to help residents find employment and connect with social services.
The money comes from two programs administered by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development.
The Public Housing Family Self-Sufficiency Program will provide $69,000. The Resident Opportunities and Self Sufficiency Service Coordinators Program will provide $701,265.
Both programs pay for service coordinators to work directly with residents and connect them with education, job training and placement programs, as well as computer and financial literacy services. The resident opportunities money can also be used to help elderly or people with disabilities who live in public housing maintain an independent lifestyle.
The money for Providence is a piece of $95 million in grants announced by HUD on Wednesday. The agency estimated that the grants would allow receiving organizations to hire or retain about 650 service coordinators.
