Providence loses ground as ‘city for singles’

Providence is No. 40 among the Best Cities for Singles, Forbes said in its seventh annual ranking of selected cities nationwide, while Boston weighs in at No. 11.

The ratings – of 40 major urban areas chosen from the U.S. Census Bureau list of Metropolitan Areas – were based on culture; job growth; the cost of living alone; nightlife; online dating; total number of singles; and a Harris Interactive poll that asked adults nationwide about each city’s “coolness.”

Providence lost ground this year, Forbes said, because of its last-place finish in the online dating category and its 35th rank in job growth. “Singles want to know that they’ll be able to nurture an interesting and prosperous career,” the report observed.

The San Francisco-Oakland metro area was ranked No. 1; it won high marks in all categories, including the top score for culture. Rounding out the top five were New York, Los Angeles, Atlanta and Chicago.
