PROVIDENCE – Construction employment in the Providence-Warwick-Fall River metropolitan area in September increased 3% year over year to 26,400 jobs, not seasonally adjusted, according to the Associated General Contractors of America Wednesday.

The 3% growth rate tied for the No. 163 highest in the United States.

  • Construction employment in the Taunton-Middleborough-Norton metro area also increased 3% year over year, to 3,600 jobs, according to the report.
  • In the New Bedford metro area, construction employment remained unchanged from one year prior in September at 2,700 jobs.
  • Construction employment in the Norwich-New London, Conn.-Westerly metro area increased 5% year over year to 4,300 jobs. The growth rate ranked No. 102 in the U.S.

The fastest construction employment growth of any metro area in the country took place in the Pocatello, Idaho, metro area, increasing 17% year over year in September. The fastest increase in New England was in the Springfield, Mass., metro area, rising 14% in that time.

The ACGA said construction employment increased in 68% of U.S. metro areas between September 2018 and September 2019.

“Even though construction firms in over two-thirds of the nation’s metro areas were able to add employees in the last year, our survey suggests employers in still more locations would have done so if they could find more-qualified workers to hire,” said Ken Simonson, the AGCA’s chief economist. “Job openings at construction have been at record levels in recent months, showing that contractors are still eager to hire.”
