The No. 1 growth rate in metro construction employment took place in Midland, Texas, in October, rising 25 percent to 36,000 workers.

AGCA said construction employment grew in 78 percent of 358 measured metro areas nationwide year over year in October.

“The construction industry is improving the economies of metro areas nationwide, but those gains are at risk,” said Stephen E. Sandherr, the association’s CEO, in a statement. “Public officials should promptly overhaul career and technical education to prepare more students for rewarding and high-paying careers in construction. Meanwhile, there is an immediate need for skilled construction workers from outside the U.S.”
