Providence metro unemployment down

PROVIDENCE – The Providence metropolitan area unemployment fell rate to 11.2 percent in July from 11.7 percent in July 2010, according to non-seasonally adjusted data from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.

The jobless rate increased, however, in the Providence-Fall River-Warwick metropolitan area when compared with a month earlier, when it was 10.4 percent.

The number of jobless people in the area totaled 79,000 in July, down from 83,900 a year earlier.

The New Bedford metropolitan area saw unemployment drop to 11.2 percent in July, from 11.9 percent a year earlier. When comparing July to June, however, the jobless rate edged up from 10.9 percent.

Unemployment rates were lower in July than a year earlier in 257 of the 372 U.S. metropolitan areas, higher in 94 areas, and unchanged in 21 areas.

Twelve areas recorded jobless rates of at least 15 percent, while 10 areas registered rates of less than 5 percent. The highest rates were recorded in El Centro, Calif., and Yuma, Ariz., at 30.8 percent and 30.0 percent, respectively.

The largest year-over-year unemployment rate decreases in July were registered in Rockford, Ill., down 3.3 percentage points, and Steubenville-Weirton, Ohio-W.Va., down 3 points.
