
PROVIDENCE – The unemployment rate in the Providence-Warwick-Fall River metropolitan area was 3.7% in July, not seasonally adjusted, level with the Rhode Island unemployment rate and lower than the national rate of 4%, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics Wednesday.
The metro unemployment rate declined 0.5 percentage points year over year, the same as the shift in Rhode Island.

The civilian labor force increased 2,241 people to 699,861 people. The number of unemployed in the area declined 3,594 year over year to 25,679 people.
Employment in the metro area increased 1.4% year over year to 601,100 workers employed.
In the New Bedford metro area, the unemployment rate was 4.2%, a 1 percentage-point decline year over year. The Massachusetts unemployment rate at that time was 2.9%, a decline of 0.7 percentage points year over year. The area’s civilian labor force declined to 86,927 people from 87,613 people year over year. The area’s unemployed also declined, to 3,637 people from 4,572.
Employment in the New Bedford metro increased 0.9% year over year to 67,600 workers employed.
The Norwich-New London, Conn.-Westerly metro area was reported to have a 3.5% unemployment rate at the end of July, a 0.6 percentage-point decline year over year. The area’s civilian labor force declined 1.2% year over year to 145,778 people. The number of unemployed in the area declined 15.4% year over year to 5,069 people.
The number of employed workers declined 0.6% year over year to 131,800 in July.
Unemployment rates were lower year over year in July in 217 of the 389 metropolitan areas measured by the BLS, higher in 141 areas, and unchanged in 31 areas.
The metro area with the lowest unemployment rate in July was the Burlington-South Burlington, Vt., metro area at 1.8%.
