PROVIDENCE – Providence has reached a $5.9 million resolution with the International Association of Fire Fighters Local 799, the city announced Friday.
“I am pleased that the city and the firefighters union have been able to reach a resolution that is fair to all parties,” said Mayor Jorge O. Elorza. “I am grateful to Chief Justice Frank Williams, Union President Paul Doughty, Union Vice President Derek Silva, Public Safety Commissioner Steven Paré, City Solicitor Jeffrey Dana and all who worked tirelessly on this. I look forward to resolving all of these matters and working together as a city to move Providence forward.”

The parties had reached an agreement in January resolving a prolonged period of labor discord over staffing levels, overtime amounts and a work schedule that firefighters had decried as unsafe. However, it had not addressed an ongoing arbitration and state court action filed by the firefighter union via the Fair Labor Standards Act in 2013, while Angel Taveras was mayor.
The $5.9 million will be paid out in two parts: $2.8 million of the resolution has been marked for settling ongoing arbitration, while $3.1 million will be paid out to union members over two fiscal years to settle the 2013 FLSA lawsuit.
The agreement will now go to IAFF Local 799 membership for review.
