Providence receives $45K to fight childhood hunger

PROVIDENCE – The National League of Cities has selected Providence as one of 15 cities that will receive a grant and technical assistance to combat childhood hunger, the office of Mayor Angel Taveras announced Monday.
Providence’s Healthy Communities Office will receive the $45,000 grant through the Cities Combating Child Hunger through Afterschool and Summer Meal Programs initiative.
“Children need access to nutritious meals throughout the year,” said Mayor Taveras in a statement. “This grant will help support community food security and ensure our children are ready to learn.”
In addition to the grant, Providence and the other cities will receive guidance and access to national experts to help create new meals programs and reach more children throughout the year.
Other cities selected to receive assistance through the CHAMPS initiative include: Baltimore, Md.; Columbus, Ohio; Gary, Ind.; Hagerstown, Md.; Houston, Texas; Kansas City, Kan.; Louisville, Ky.; Missoula, Mont.; Rochester, N.Y.; Seattle, Wash.; Tacoma, Wash.; Tallahassee, Fla.; Trotwood, Ohio; and Waco, Texas.
