PROVIDENCE – Verizon Communications Inc. said this week that Providence will receive a 5G Ultra Wideband service by the end of 2019.
The new technology is a fifth-generation cellular data network. Currently, 5G networks do not provide as much range as the previous cellular network 4G, requiring more and smaller transmission sites than current cell tower networks.

5G wireless technology will work in tandem with the current 4G cell networks already active in the United States. 5G technology is expected to provide significantly faster data transmission than 4G networks in addition to increased bandwidth.
Experts have predicted that 5G, given its range, will be primarily used in dense urban locations as opposed to less densely populated areas.
