PROVIDENCE – The Providence VA Medical Center celebrated the completion of two multimillion-dollar projects last week, with ribbon-cuttings at its new intensive care unit and its parking garage.

The facility’s renovated $8 million intensive care unit includes nine patient units, individual rooms for patients, updated nurse stations and more space for visitors and family consultations.

The 10,000-square-foot unit is located next to the hospital’s surgical suite. Medical center officials call the renovation a “significant clinical improvement from the former facility.”

Official openings for both the intensive care unit and the parking garage, which can fit 450 cars, took place on Feb. 5.

Funding for the $16 million multistory garage was provided under the 2018 Consolidated Appropriations Acts. The 18-month project was the first to be awarded under the act’s increased minor construction threshold of $20 million, according to the Providence VA Medical Center.

The garage is expected to bring an end to parking challenges for the facility, which has seen an increase in outpatient appointments for veterans in recent years.
