PROVIDENCE – The city’s Zoning Board of Review will take up an appeal on May 9 of the City Plan Commission approval this year for a new mixed-use building in the Armory Historical District.

The property owner, Michael Lemoi, received permission on Feb. 28 from the commission to tear down the existing, vacant, two-story commercial building and replace it with a five-story apartment building, consisting of 35 apartments over 7,200 square feet of ground-floor retail. On-site parking will consist of 22 vehicle spaces and room for 20 bicycles.

According to a post on the West Broadway Neighborhood Association website, residents who are opposed to the new construction plan to attend, although a public hearing isn’t scheduled.

Over more than a year of city review of the project, several neighbors said they were opposed to the project because they worried it is much larger than neighboring buildings and would open the door to larger buildings.
