Public housing in Rhode Island goes smoke-free

PROVIDENCE – A new rule from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development has required public-housing communities to ban indoor smoking.

In Rhode Island, where the communities adopted the rule prior to its July 30 enactment nationwide, approximately 95 percent of the complexes have already gone smoke-free.

The rule is expected to affect 15,000 families living in Rhode Island public housing, and is aimed at reducing exposure to secondhand smoke, according to a news release.
