PROVIDENCE – The Providence Department of Planning and Development and the R.I. Public Transit Authority are hosting a meeting, regarding the latest plans for changes to Greater Kennedy Plaza, from 5:30-6:30 p.m. on Aug. 16 at the Joseph A. Doorley Jr. Municipal Building, located at 444 Westminster St.
In September 2017, Providence Mayor Jorge O. Elorza proposed a nearly $5 million Phase I redesign of the plaza that included rerouting of traffic to create a more-continuous public space, concentrate bus traffic and reroute car traffic, including the creation of a new crosswalk at the center of the plaza.
The goal, as stated in 2017, is to make the park more walkable – connecting the Biltmore Hotel and Burnside Park.
Funding for the project came from the Downtown Transit Connector project, RIPTA and the city’s Capital Improvement Plan.
The Department of Planning and Development said the meeting will be an update on the latest improvement plans.
